Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Cruises
Topic: Cruises
Why do all my friends keep telling me to try a cruise?
Cruising has become one of the more popular vacation activities - and for good reason. You'll have the chance to visit a variety of destinations, without spending a lot of time in airports or in the car. While cruising on to your next destination, you'll enjoy fine dining, entertainment, informational talks on the destination, shopping, spa service, and more! You also pre-pay most of your expenses which allows great peace of mind.
What's included in a cruise package?
Your passage and stateroom, all meals, on-board activities and entertainment, and transportation from port to port. If you purchase your airfare from the cruise line, they usually include roundtrip transfers from the airport to the ship, too.
Isn't it expensive?
There are cruise lines to fit a variety of budgets. Cruises no longer have to be formal, expensive affairs. Choosing an inside cabin over an outside cabin and sailing in the off season can be ways to save even more. Your Witte Travel agent can help you choose from a variety of cruise lines and sailings to help obtain the value you're looking for.
What is there to do on the ship?
A little bit - or a lot - of everything. Most cruise ships have a variety of nightclubs, lounges, and shows - all included in your original price. Some ships have movie theatres, libraries, and destination talks - again, all included. Also included are swimming pools, hot tubs, work out rooms and exercise classes. Many cruises are now offering special activities such as art auctions, wine tastings, cooking lessons, financial lectures, sports talks, dance lessons, and more. Luxurious spa services are often available for a fee, and there are always plenty of shipboard shops to round out your land purchases. One thing is certain; you'll never be bored!
What's not included?
Drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, spa services, and some contests or special activities, such as golfing, are often not included. Tipping is additional on most cruises. Transportation to and from the airport is likely additional if you haven't purchased your airfare from the cruise line. Activities and meals while in port are not included (although you can always eat on the ship). Of course, you decide for yourself how much you spend at the casino! Your Witte Travel agent can tell you what is and isn't included on your cruise vacation.
Should I reserve an inside or an outside cabin?
That depends on your budget and preferences. If you are on a tight budget, or prefer to spend your money in other areas, an inside cabin on most ships offers many of the same amenities as the more expensive outside cabins. The biggest difference is that "inside" cabins do not have windows. Some passengers are bothered by not being able to tell whether it's day or night. If you think you'll feel crowded in a room with no windows, an inside cabin isn't for you - no matter what the savings! Most outside cabins, which are usually obtained for a reasonable cost, offer an oceanview and breathtaking scenery and makes the cabin feel that much bigger. None of the passenger cabins on a cruise ship are below water level and most windows don't open.
Do I have to dress up every night?
No. These days, many ships offer "formal nights" as an option. If you enjoy dressing up, you'll certainly have that opportunity. Most ships still do not allow shorts in their main dining room. Your agent will fill you in on the proper dress for your ship.
I've heard you have to eat with the same people, in the same place, at the same time every night. Is this true?
Not anymore. Cruise Lines are finally recognizing that you have your own ideas on how to spend time on your vacation. Many ships offer a variety of dining options, from the traditional "main dining" to pizzerias and small bistros. Again, your Witte agent can guide you to the ship that best suits your preferences.
We'd like to take our kids - but we need a vacation, too!
Cruising is perfect for you - your agent can show you different cruise lines that cater to families. They have age-appropriate clubs, where your kids can join with other children their age in a variety of activities - leaving you free to sit peacefully in the sun or participate in activities yourself! Some cruise lines offer evening activities as well, leaving you free to dance the night away or enjoy a moonlit stroll. Most cruise lines offer in-room babysitting for a fee. The choices are endless, depending on the cruise line, you and your family are free to pick what activities you'd like to do together, and when you'd all like to do your own thing!
