Tips for Trips

Getting ready to travel...

International travel can be a rich and rewarding adventure. Whether you have waited a lifetime to take the perfect trip or are an experienced world traveler, we would like to offer some advice to help you plan a safe and healthy trip. Although departure day may be many weeks or months in the future, the adventure really begins now, as you plan and prepare for your trip.

Before you go...

Before you go on a tour, read up on the culture, people, and history of the places you will travel. Bookstores and libraries are good resources. Among the best are the Michelin Tourist Guides and Fodor's. Other sources of information are videos, travel magazines and the travel sections of major newspapers. Many foreign tourist bureaus also provide free information and brochures and/or maps on travel abroad. A wealth of travel information is also available on the Internet.

You will be amazed at how much more an informed traveler can appreciate the people, arts, music, architecture, history and general character of foreign cities and countries. A little advance preparation can also be a great time saver since you will have some idea of those things you particularly want to see, do, and shop for in your free time.

Paperback phrase books in foreign languages can also be very helpful - and fun! Most of the people you meet will be able to speak at least some English; but they will be delighted when you attempt a few simple words and phrases - like please, thank you, good day and excuse me - in their language.

Attitude...

Tips for TripsYour tour is going to be one of the most exciting experiences of your life. You will see and do things you only dreamed of until now, and you will have a chance to meet people who live in circumstances quite different from your own. In order to get the most out of your tour, orientate yourself to have an open mind, to accept each situation gracefully and to take things in stride. Consider the following...

Ten Commandments for World Travelers

  1. Thou shalt not expect to find things precisely as they are at home, for thou hast left home to find things different.
  2. Thou shalt not take anything too seriously for a carefree mind is the basis for a great vacation.
  3. Thou shalt not let other tour members get on thy nerves for thou art paying good money to enjoy thyself.
  4. Thou shalt not worry; he that worrieth hath little joy, and few things are fatal.
  5. Thou shalt not judge all people of a country by one person with whom thou had a problem.
  6. Thou shalt in Rome do somewhat as the Romans do.
  7. Thou shalt carry thy passport at all times; a person without a passport is a person without a country.
  8. Blessed is he who can say "Thank You" in any language; verily it is worth more than gold.
  9. Blessed is he who can make change in any currency for he shalt not be cheated.
  10. Thou art welcome in every land; treat thy hosts with respect and thou shalt be an honored guest.
